The prominence of mainstream search engines and the rise of web-scale, pre-indexed discovery services present new challenges and opportunities for publishers, librarians, vendors, and researchers. With the aim of furthering collaborative conversations, SAGE commissioned a study of opportunities for improving academic discoverability with value chain experts in the scholarly communications ecosystem. Results were released in January 2012 as a white paper titled Improving Discoverability of Scholarly Content in the Twentieth Century: Collaboration Opportunities for Librarians, Publishers, and Vendors. Following the white paper, this article explores the implications for these findings through review of commissioned studies, research reports, journal articles, conference papers, and white papers published in the ensuing twelve months. Sidebars highlight especially promising cross-sector initiatives for enhancing researcher discoverability of the scholarly corpus at appropriate points in their workflow, including the NISO Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) and the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID). Concluding reflections highlight opportunities for librarians to contribute to cross-sector collaborations that sup-port discovery of quality peer-reviewed content by improving navigation, discoverability, visibility, and usage of the scholarly corpus.
The music industry is one that has been declining in overall sales for more than a decade. In recent years, advances in technology have altered many of the discovery and delivery platforms for music. The purpose of the study was to examine the different variables that affect the ways in which consumers use the internet to find and consume their music. The research uncovered a distinct difference in discovery and listening behavior between younger and older demographic groups. Digital music software, music blogs and new streaming services have become widely used among younger generations. However, the radio has been identified as the most popular method for both discovery and listening to music among older adults.
By way of follow-up to earlier work in understanding and improving discoverability of scholarly content, this article reports on recent data and reflections that led to clearer definitions of discovery and discoverability, as well as deeper cross-sector collaborations on standards, transparency, metadata, and new forms of partnerships. Recent advances in discoverability are also described - from enhanced library-based web-scale searching to serving researcher needs through the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) registry. The article points to a 2014 SAGE white paper that presents in greater detail opportunities for wider collaboration among libraries, publishers, service providers, and researchers in the inter-est of furthering discovery, access, and usage of scholarly writings and creative work.
