Disha

Abstract

In April of 2013, Colorado College hosted a momentous entrepreneurial event for its students. The Big Idea was a pitch event where Colorado College students presented their project idea before a panel of five judges in order to compete for $50,000 in funding towards the project. The panel reviewed the project ideas based on financial stability, effect on quality of life, feasibility and presentation, and the potential impact of the project on the world. In this video clip, entrepreneurs Navin Rahman, Samantha Barlow, and Alexander Harleen present their Big Idea, Disha.

Note

"The idea is to start a Resource Hub that will include a library of books (mostly ʺliberal artsʺ kind of books - humanities, social sciences, arts, literature, fiction, leisure reading, global issues etc), a collection of movies and documentaries with a screening room and a coffee corner. The idea has stemmed from the fact that high school, college and university students have little or no access to intellectual books and resources. They are usually limited to reading textbooks only. There is also a scarcity of library/good bookstores in the country. Thus, this resource hub will hold items that would not just supplement their text book readings but also allow them to be exposed to global issues, global literatures, art and thought processes while creating an intellectually stimulating environment where people can come enjoy a cup of coffee while reading items of their interests. People will also be able to pick out movies/documentaries and watch them in the screening room individually or in groups at a scheduled date (through sign ups). It's because the educational institutions don’t have good resources, that the country has become a victim of brain drain in the past few years. This resource hub will be a means to preserve the intellectual vitality of the community and create a more vibrant and engaging community. The hub will also host events like International film festivals and the celebration of international holidays/ important themed days (such as World AIDS day) during which movies/documentaries related to such themes will be screened and related books will be put on display for people to check out. The hub will include reading rooms and project rooms for people to use. Initially the hub will restrict the checking out of items beyond the premises of the hub to prevent theft and misuse. But as it becomes more popular among people, we will develop a way for members to borrow items (such as through credit cards/ university ID numbers, memberships can be done through the educational institutions the borrowers are enrolled in or such) In addition to that, the hub will also be running programs with schools for underprivileged children through which, children in groups will have the access to come and use the available resources (both books and movies/documentaries). It will also be holding specific collections of books/movies that will be lent out to these schools, and will be especially catered toward the needs and the demands of their curricula. What makes us special and unique? We will be the first ʺResource Hubʺ in the country which will provide people with a space to expand their horizons and engage with an intellectual community. We would also be the only coffee place in the city that comes with so many other resources and facilities. The coffee corner and the hosting of special movie events will serve as our main form of revenue for the maintenance and running of the hub."--Business proposal
