Abstract

This colorful painting depicts the mountain aescetic En no Gyoja, born in 634, the purported founder of the Shugendo religion, a syncretic mix of Shinto, Daoism, and various sects of Buddhism. He is revered as holy man, and sometimes worshiped as a bodhisattva in Japan.
