Chrysanthemums and Birds by Rock

Abstract

Chinese hanging scroll with vertically-oriented painting and a bronze-colored brocade silk mounting. The image is 33 cm x 120 cm and has dry, lively brush strokes illustrating an autumn scene of flowering chrysanthemum emerging from a deeply worn rock with two birds ""fighting' while a third bird perches above.

Also known by “Chang K’un,†Zhang traveled to and stayed in Japan for several years in the 1780s. The artist was interested in various subject matter, including flowers and landscapes. This example is probably from his earlier works. His landscapes and bamboo paintings were mainly derived from the Yuan (1279-1368) styles and his flowers follow the Qing master Yun Shoupin (1633-1690).
