    Dulce Lazcano, French and Francophone Studies, Colorado College Abstract of Bachelor’s Thesis, Submitted May 2015: The aim of this thesis is to explore the ways in which two groups of people, the Mexican-Americans and the Beurs, in the United States of America and France, respectively, address the issue of cultural ambiguity that they face as a result of belonging to two different, and occasionally opposing, cultures. I begin with a definition of the groups, the Mexican-Americans and the Beurs, which I examine. Then, I provide a brief historical background on the relationship between the USA and Mexico. I do the same for the historical background between the Beurs, specifically the Beurs of Algerian descendance, and France. Secondly, I examine the works of three Mexican-American Authors: Borderlands: La Frontera the New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldúa, A Xicana Codex of Changing Consciousness : Writings 2000-2010 by Cherríe L. Moraga, and Hunger of Memory: the education of Richard Rodriguez: an autobiography by Richard Rodriguez. I also explore the works of two authors that fall under the category of the Beurs: La disparition de la langue francaise by Assia Djebar and L’aventure ambiguë by Cheikh Hamidou Kane. Upon examining the ways in which each of the authors deals with the issues relating to their cultural ambiguity, I found that there is not one concrete solution to the sense of alienation that these two groups have to come to terms with.
